The Risk of Deprivation Diets

The dismal statistics of dieting state that over 90% of the people who go on diets end up gaining back all the weight that they've lost and sometimes even more.

The diet industry doesn't rush to discuss this issue since it may cause a decline in the huge sales they do each year, but this problem cannot and should not be covered up because it's a core issue which needs to be addressed.

Why does this happen? Why do people lose weight only to gain it back?

The answer lies deep within us, in the core of our biology, and is the result of years of evolution which has programmed our body to behave in a certain way.

You see, our body's main objective is to survive. It doesn't really care how we look to the opposite sex or if we can fit inside a specific pair of jeans. The body is all about self preservation and this is an instinct which goes way back to the time of the cavemen.

Therefore, our body pays close attention to how much calories we feed into it. As far as it's concerned, we can eat more than we need to since in ancient times, fat stores would serve the body as a source of energy in times when food was scarce. These days, food is abundant, but the body hasn't changed its mechanism.

Most of the diets on the '90s and many which are still around today follow a specific pattern: they are deprivation diets, which I call low-something diets. These diets work by depriving our body of a certain macro-nutrient like carbs or fat, or they simply cut down the amount of calories we eat.

What happens when we go on a deprivation diet is that our body senses this and is alarmed. It believes we're starving. And it reacts in what it believes is our best interest by slowing down our metabolic rate and enters what is known as the "starvation mode".

In the starvation mode our metabolism slows down, burning less and less calories meaning that we need to eat much less in order to continue losing weight. Hence, the fat loss plateau you may have heard of.

Once our metabolism is so slow, it's easy to start gaining weight back which is the primary reason why over 90% of people on diets end up gaining weight. They go on deprivation diets, wreck their metabolism, and face the dismal consequences.

The Fat Loss 4 Idiots diet, by working on the Calorie Shifting method avoids this trap and provides a longer more lasting weight loss effect.
